Atlas Undarum

Atlas Undarum by Giulia Parlato removes the sea from its landscape dimension in order to observe it as a modelled and reproducible phenomenon. The photographs, produced within experimental laboratories, do not simply document wave motion, but rather reveal the techno-scientific devices through which the sea is reconstructed, segmented, and rendered analytically legible. The coastline thus ceases to appear as a geographical unity and is transformed into a set of controllable parameters: sands, slopes, bathymetries, and breakwater structures become operative variables within artificial, reduced-scale environments. The sea emerges as both model and predictive space, produced through the interaction between natural phenomenon and scientific infrastructure. The images construct a zone of indeterminacy between experiment, landscape, and representation, where photography becomes an active device in the construction of the real and of its conditions of knowability.
