Layers by Giorgio Di Noto addresses coastal erosion by moving away from a direct representation of its morphological effects, focusing instead on the apparatuses through which the phenomenon is observed, measured, and modelled. The investigation shifts across sediment analysis laboratories, hydrodynamic simulation infrastructures, sample archives, and digital environments. The body of work also includes sequences dedicated to the sea surface, where wave motion conveys the immediate force of the natural phenomenon, juxtaposing direct observation with the progressive shift towards technological devices that render the landscape intelligible. Experimental tanks, computational interfaces, and data acquisition systems transform the territory into information, parameters, and simulation. The images interrogate the techno-scientific systems that make the landscape observable and modelled, showing how photography participates in the reading of the territory through a stratified analysis of different systems of observation and data visualisation.
