Sitografia
Research in geomorphology and applied geomorphology focusing on coastal and marine environments. Activities include research, education, coastal geomorphological mapping, coastal hazard assessment, and the development of digital tools such as the COSTE WebGIS, a georeferenced database of scientific literature on the dynamics of the Italian coastline.
Coastal management, monitoring of coastal systems, interdisciplinary analysis of shoreline dynamics, the development of GIS platforms for data sharing, and the improvement of predictive models under sea-level rise scenarios. It includes the Sea Proxy database and ARCHIMEDE, a WebGIS platform dedicated to Mediterranean hurricanes.
European thematic page on coastal areas. It provides an overview of impacts, vulnerabilities, policy frameworks, and adaptation options, with a focus on coastal erosion, coastal flooding, sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).
Dedicated to the development of methodologies for the analysis of coastal areas and climate change adaptation in the Western Mediterranean. The project builds on research into coastal erosion and sea-level rise along the coastlines of Lazio and Abruzzo, with the aim of developing digital tools and 50- and 100-year scenarios to support spatial planning.
CoSMoS-COAST is a coastal simulation tool based on a one-line, data-assimilative model developed as part of the CoSMoS coastal storm modelling system.
A climate service developed by ENEA to map coastal areas exposed to flood risk associated with climate change. The service integrates high-resolution models, satellite data, and field surveys, with case studies from Tuscany, Sardinia, and Lazio. Its aim is to support public authorities and decision-makers in planning climate change adaptation.
An integrated assessment tool designed to: (i) develop dynamic scenarios of catastrophic coastal hazards, such as storm surges and sea-level rise, under climate change conditions; (ii) produce scenarios of exposure and vulnerability in coastal areas; and (iii) carry out highly disaggregated, bottom-up assessments of climate change impacts on coastal regions in Europe and worldwide under global warming scenarios.
European Environment Agency, 2024. European Climate Risk Assessment. EEA Report 01/2024. Identifies 36 major climate risks for Europe, including risks affecting infrastructure, ecosystems, water resources, health, and economic stability. It provides a valuable framework for addressing coastal erosion, coastal flooding, and climate adaptation.
European Environment Agency, 2025. Global and European sea level rise. EEA Indicator.
An updated source on global and European sea-level rise. It reports that the global mean sea level has increased by approximately 23 cm since 1900, reached its highest value in the satellite record in 2024, and is expected to continue rising under IPCC emission scenarios.
GNRAC – National Group for Coastal Environment Research. An association established to promote and disseminate studies on the condition of coastal areas, the conservation and management of coastal zones. The website provides information on activities, events, and the journal Studi costieri, dedicated to coastal dynamics and integrated coastal management.
ISPRA – Coastal Atlas. Dedicated to the analysis of offshore marine and meteorological conditions along the Italian coastline and their effects on coastal areas, potential sediment transport, and coastal erosion. It includes wave data, wave climate analyses, coastal sectors, storm surge events, and graphical and tabular materials supporting the physical characterization of Italian coastlines.
MASE – National Geoportal, Coastal Areas section. The national cartographic portal of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, dedicated to the consultation of territorial and environmental data, including information related to coastal areas. It represents an institutional source for maps, geographic data, and national spatial information resources.
MASE – Coastal Erosion, STA Directorate. Institutional webpage of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security dedicated to coastal erosion, with reference to the activities of the competent Directorate. It can be cited as a national source for the technical and administrative framework on coastal erosion processes and coastal management policies.
MASE – Coastal shoreline changes from 1960 to 2012. Webpage dedicated to the national processing of data on areas and beach sections experiencing accretion or retreat along the coasts of mainland Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia, for the periods 1960–1994 and 1994–2012. The resource documents recent shoreline evolution and distinguishes eroding coastal sections from areas undergoing shoreline advancement.
